Language and Play

Michelle Quick will be starting the first 'Language and Play' session for babies and tots in Llanferres on 26th March 9:30 to 10:30 am. All are welcome !

Pupil Deprivation Grant

The Welsh Government is committed to tackling the effect of poverty on pupil attainment. Schools receive grant funding of £450 per pupil entitled to free school meals .This year this amount has been doubled to £900 per pupil. As part of the condition of the grant, schools are obliged to publish how this money has been spent and the outcomes achieved.

Ysgol Bro Famau has very low numbers of pupils entitled to free school meals - our 3 year average is 2.2% of the school population entitled to FSM.
We therefore recieve little or no support from this grant.
Last year (2013 to 2014) we put the grant towards Key Stage Two reading resources to improve boy's reading skills. We were very pleased that at the end of Key Stage Two all our Yr 6 pupils scored well in the reading tests and there was no difference between the boy's and girl's performance.

This year our spending plans have included the' Playclub' project for Foundation Phase pupils which is aiming to help improve early reading, oracy and spelling skills.

Also Wrexham FC have worked on a literacy and fitness project aimed at improving Year 6 writing (particularly the boys).

Playclub Project

We will shortly be starting an exciting new project called 'Playclub' The aim of the project is to enjoy early reading and number activities at home.
Each week your child will bring home a 'Playbag' with an information card, some interesting resources and a CD.

Mrs Thomas will be leading the project which will take place on both sites.
We shall start the project with the Nursery children first then the Reception and Year One children.

Mrs Thomas will be holding meetings for Nursery parents/Carers on Thursday 16th October to introduce the project and the bags. These will take place at 9:00 in Llanferres and 11:00 in Llanarmon.

Parent Questionnaire

Thank you very much to all the parents who took the time to complete the questionnaires last month. We had 20 questionnaires returned to us and we are delighted by the overwhelming positive responses.

It is very reassuring that you feel the children receive good teaching and care and that the school is well run.

We constantly strive to ensure the children have the highest quality teaching and learning  at Ysgol Bro Famau and your comments are very important to us and help us know how to improve.

A couple of issues have been highlighted :-

1. A couple of year 6 parents felt that they would like to see more homework in preparation for next year.   Mr Jones will be sending some additional maths homework after Easter , this is in addition to the usual homework grid.

2. A couple of parents were unsure about the procedure for complaints.   The Complaints procedure  and policy  are available on the website ( policies section) although we would always hope to resolve any issues swiftly with a phone call or a chat as always!

Diolch yn fawr iawn.
